Grato - GB36 Classic

Historical Summary:

Original name: Princess Ruby, no records of original owner.

Sold for $46,000 to Ted Sahlstom of Kirkland and Warren Cooler of Salem OR (co-owners), renamed Bonnie Anne and moored in Admiralty Marina. Used mostly for charter 12/15/75 until sold 8/30/1982. The records indicate extensive trips under charter including throughout the San Juan Islands, Gulf Islands, as well as Alaska. One quote stands out in the charter manual where it notes: “The moral of the story is if the engine overheats, stop the engine and radio for help—unless you are going on the rocks.”

Sold 8/30/82 to William King of Fairbanks, Alaska for $58,000. Renamed Golden Vanity, she continues to be moored in Admiralty Marina. Records of this time note equipment upgrades including a phone (note, this was ’82), a furnace and carpet.

The historical records stop at this point. Stories from our sales broker indicate that the boat sat on the hard for several years and deteriorated significantly, including collection of rainwater in the bilge. She was sold at a sheriff’s auction to a well-intentioned gentleman (name unknown) who had aspirations of extensive restoration. Significant progress started with the assistance of a shipwright but stalled before completion.

Boat was to sold to Daryl Lin of Bellingham (date and price unknown). Renamed Michael Vincent, she was moored in a Bellingham Bay boathouse with the intention of continuing the restoration but it appears that little beyond a few paint repairs was accomplished. The boat was offered for sale for nearly two years with periodic price reductions.

We (Ted and Peggy Trepanier) fielded an offer in the summer of 2018 and proceeded with pre-buy inspections which exposed multiple issues, resulting in withdrawal of the offer. The broker made contact approximately two months later to inform us that with all the exposed issues there is no interest, the boat will soon be sold for parts, and encouraged “any offer” if we have “any interest”. Believing this boat still had life, a purchase price was accepted 11/10/2018. She is renamed Grato (Italian for Grateful) and moved from Bellingham to Port Orchard over the New Years weekend of 2019.

Since that time Grato has experienced extensive work (documented on Facebook) with work continuing while we balance restoration projects with cruising. Relocated to a boathouse at the Olympia Yacht Club in May, 2022.
