Historical Summary:
Beagle
Originally built by Fellows & Stewart of San Pedro in 1951 to a William Garden design for George Mitchell of Pasadena, California. She was named Beagle in tribute to the HMS Beagle, a Royal Navy brig-sloop, famously known for its 1831-1836 voyage that carried Charles Darwin as a naturalist, which greatly influenced his development of the theory of evolution. See this separate CYA listing for Beagle.
Katherine Jane
Loten Hooley of Garibaldi OR. chartered the Katherine Jane with his family and friends each summer from 2013 to 2016 through Anacortes Charters. Loten loved the vessel, and so bought it when it came up for sale following a fire. Hooley planned and executed a full revival of the boat and enjoyed cruising it for awhile while planning to build a new replica of the design to incorporate his standards throughout. He contacted Mystic Seaport and acquired a set William Gardens plans, and has proceeded with the new boat construction in his shop in the Port of Garibaldi, Oregon. The new boat is planned for completion in the spring of 2026. [Source: Olivia Hooley, daughter of Loten Hooley, 3/31/25)
JoAhna K
In November of 2020, Hooley sold the boat to a new owner who has renamed her "JoAhna K". The owner is a writer and you can follow his adventures with JoAhna K here.
